THE VOICES IN MY HEAD

So I gather the 10 or so young adults at the meeting (I am 62 so you can surmise on your own without much didactic reasoning what I mean by young) to discuss the “Voices that Play in our heads”

Ages varied among those in the group from 14 to 28. See “YOUNG”

I encourage you to be aware of the voice that has started to take space up in your head right now. “This is stupid” “This is interesting (hopefully, that is my voice as I compose)” “My ass itches,” “Ass itches” may prompt a voice in your head as you read this, “I think I am gonna stop as this is meaningless babble” “I wish I had a job and did not have time to read this crap” “This guy is an asshole for bringing up that I don’t have a job” and on and on…

So in order for the discussion not to just explode into existential pabulum I asked 3 questions after a brief presentation of what I was proposing to them as a “theory” and hence a point of discussion.

First the theory.

I’ve always digged Jack London

Derek, Ma and Me

I’ve tried to tell this story much in the same way one tells a story to a friend. It’s something that has occurred, you think about it, turn it over in your head and then tell it. I don’t know if it works or it doesn’t. Don’t know if this is what is expected or …

Stoop-Style Stories

When Dan Boyd suggested that I meet him at Stoop-Style Stories, I said, “Sure, I’ll be there!” It was about ten minutes later when my worry started to kick in:

“I don’t know where this place is, how will I get there? What if I’m not cool enough? Or what if it’s super awkward to go up to strangers and ask if they’re Dan Boyd? It’ll be dark. I could get struck by lightning. Or kidnapped by goblins.”

To at least muffle the voice of my worries, I brought a friend. Goblin crisis averted.

Before Stoop-Style Stories, I had never been to a storytelling show, so I had no idea what to expect when I waltzed into Rosa’s Lounge. What I did find, as the evening progressed, is something that regular storytelling audience members will take as a matter of fact: this is a ritual.

Lisa Scott will be a feature next month! Thanks so much!

What a great show. The word of the night seemed to be, diverse.

The evening opened up with a great story from Ken Brezinsky about fracking that reminded me of David Holmes’ Fracking Song.

And the night continued on to talk about religion, mothers, missing fathers, lost loves, and games of scrabble. It was a fun night, we got to see Amanda Rountree transform into a typical Dick’s shopper. I think that’s likely to be my biggest belly laugh of the year.

It was a really full crowd for an early January. We had a stellar points turn out too, super-crazy thanks to the thirty-three who dropped your email on us. If you missed the email sign up, there is a place to do it in the sidebar to the right.
